This song has a strange emotional power over me that may come from memories of my mom singing it in the kitchen when I was just a toddler. I also have a vague recollection of hearing the song repeatedlyy on TV as part of a mid-'60s 'spin-off' series called 'Tammy.' To be sure, Jay Livingston and Ray Evans were an amazing songwriting team, giving us, Que Será, Será, Mona Lisa, Silver Bells and even the theme from 'Bonanza"!

Awww that is wonderful! Interestingly a German person I sang it for once said they remembered it from a TV show in Germany called Tammy die Hausfrau or something like that...just looked it up and it turns out it's the one you're talking about, dubbed into German. It was massively popular over there.

Happy Anniversary to Linda and Robert! This is a splendid song selection as a way to celebrate your 40th and all those memories you have together. That was a lovely rendition, Patricia and Matt. I enjoyed the singing in this guitar arrangement, which shows that the song stands on its own without the need for large-scale production with clarinet, horn stabs and layered harmonies. I enjoyed the discussion of the song's history... also regarding the chord changes. I laughed at Matt's alternate lyrics and Patricia's "reality check version" of the couple finding a new home. Being a young kid in California in the early '70s, I actually recall seeing that bank advertisement on TV.

Well done once again, as always. (Every generation is doomed to want what their Grandparents had, and to discard what their Parents left them.) Sic transit gloria mundi. The "latest thing" is rarely as long lasting as that which has been tried and tested over a significant length of time. AND ... the value of many things is not recognised until they are no longer available.

  • @paulg01

And I agree with everything you said about having physical media and their different sound qualities. I certainly don't trust streaming platforms to keep things available, but these days I do tend to buy downloads rather than CDs purely to avoid the storage problem. Having said that, I am periodically adding to my collection of 78s, which I play on my HMV 102 ("The World's Finest Portable" according to HMV). I think all my discs are electrical recordings, mind you, but it still feels very different listening to purely acoustic playback.
